"The first recorded case of carcinoma of the lung (hof: longkanker) associated with asbestos was described by Lynch and Smith (1935). By 1955, according to Doll, a total of 61 cases had been reported. Included in these cases was one mesothelioma. Cartier (1952) mentioned two cases of diffuse mesothelioma from a Canadian chrysotile mine. A further three cases were described by van de Schoot (1958). Unfortunately no indication is given in the literature regarding the type of asbestos to which the majority of recorded cases of carcinoma (longkanker) were exposed. However, discussion with management and medical officers of two of the factories, in which the majority of the cases reported in Britain were employed, suggests that most of these workers were handling chrysotile asbestos (Wagner, 1958).
