"In 1935 LYNCH and SMITH in the United States suggested that patients with asbestosis might be exposed to an increased risk of bronchial carcinoma; and by 1955 DOLL in this country had demonstrated a tenfold excess of bronchial carcinoma in a group of asbestos textile workers. A follow-up of this same population and those entering the same factory after 1933 now shows that the vigorous action taken then and later to reduce dust levels has been largely successful in eliminating the hazard, though a further period of observation is necessary before complete success can be claimed. Ironically, as these encouraging results are made known, the asbestos industry is faced with a second type of tumour. Convincing evidence from many countries now associates diffuse mesothelial tumours of the pleura and peritoneum with past exposure to asbestos. In some cases, both in South Africa and Britain, this exposure has been environmental and not occupational."
