This was the situation that the grandfather of [appellant], Mr. Henrique [appellant] encountered when he arrived on the island in 1952 after a sojourn on Aruba. His arrival was met with general indifference. He soon turned his hand to the only viable option on Statia, wrestling a living from the soil. After a while people began to consider The Mansion, “[appellant]’s land”. He acted as if he was in fact the owner.
